Ahmedabad: He ran from his crime. But even thousands of kilometres away, he could not outrun his guilt. On Tuesday, the 29-year-old man who had fled the city after slashing his father’s throat in a fit of rage returned from Thailand, surrendered to police and confessed to the murder, shocking his family and stunning investigators.ACP (N Division) S M Patel said, “Varun, who allegedly murdered his 65-year-old father Dr Naren Kirwani at their Satellite flat late last week, has been arrested.”According to Satellite police, Varun and his 65-year-old father had been living together at Vaibhav Tower near Mansi Circle, while his mother and sister lived separately in Vastrapur. “They had moved out as Varun had a short temper and often clashed with family members. Dr Kirwani chose to stay with Varun, who was unemployed, as he believed that he could reform his son with patience and love,” said police. The murder came to light on Saturday when Dr Kirwani failed to show up for lunch at the Vastrapur flat — a daily routine. Police said, “When he did not answer his calls either, his wife and daughter became worried and went to the Satellite flat. To their shock, they found Dr Kirwani lying in a pool of blood. Varun was missing.” They called the Satellite police, who registered a case of murder against Varun.Police launched a manhunt, and preliminary investigation revealed that Varun had first travelled to Delhi and then boarded a flight to Bangkok. An officer close to the investigation said, “Varun whiled away two days in Bangkok. But the emotional weight of his crime began to crush him. “While in Bangkok, he messaged his mother and sister, saying he regretted everything and wanted to surrender,” said inspector V J Chaudhary of Satellite police. His family immediately informed the police, who arranged for his detention upon return. “On Tuesday, Varun landed in Delhi and turned himself in. He was taken into custody and brought to Ahmedabad for questioning,” said the inspector.Officers described Varun’s surrender as highly unusual. “It is rare for someone to flee the country after committing murder and then voluntarily return to confess. We are assessing his mental health and psychological state as part of the probe,” said an officer involved in the investigation.Forensic teams have collected evidence from the crime scene, and statements from family members are being recorded. Investigators are also tracking Varun’s movements and financial transactions to piece together a clearer picture of what led to the fatal outburst.
