Ahmedabad: Shehzad Khan Pathan, the leader of the opposition in the AMC, alleged that while the AMC collects crores of rupees in property taxes from residents, it fails to provide basic amenities. The city has over 2,00,000 streetlight poles, but complaints about non-functioning streetlights have increased due to the expiration of the operation and maintenance contract. In the last five months, there were 48,209 complaints about streetlights not working, with 216 daily complaints remaining unresolved.
He further said that 3,000 to 4,000 streetlights are non-functional daily in Ahmedabad. The operation and maintenance contract for the city’s streetlight poles expired, and a new contractor has not yet been appointed, leading to an increase in complaints. Due to the negligence of the AMC, residents are facing difficulties.
“In 2022-23, residents filed 92,539 complaints about streetlights, and in 2023-24, there were 95,588 complaints. From Sep 2024 to Jan 2025, 48,209 complaints were recorded about non-functioning streetlights. In the last five months, 6,411 complaints were recorded in the central zone, 6,464 in the east zone, 6,905 in the north zone, 5,405 in the north-west zone, 4,227 in the south-west zone, 10,594 in the south zone, and 8,172 in the west zone. We demand urgent resolution of these complaints,” said Pathan.
