Ahmedabad: City police registered 127 cases related to nylon kite thread and 15 cases on glass-coated manja in areas under Sector-1 jurisdiction, comprising western parts of the city and some Walled City areas, said Sector 1 additional commissioner of police Neeraj Badgujar.
In Sector 2, which comprises the eastern part, around 110 cases related to nylon thread and glass-coated manja were reported, said additional commissioner of police for Sector 2, Jaypal Singh Rathore.
A total of 609 FIRs were registered and 612 individuals have been arrested in Gujarat so far for manufacturing, selling and stocking prohibited items such as nylon threads, lanterns, and glass-coated threads in the run-up to Uttarayan, the govt told the High Court on Monday.
In an affidavit submitted in response to a PIL seeking the high court’s direction to prohibit the use of nylon threads, strings coated with glass, and other harmful substances for flying kites during the festival on Jan 14, the state home department said that between Jan 9 and 12, police lodged FIRs against 99 manufacturers, 50 stockists and 404 sellers of these items across Gujarat. Prohibited items worth Rs 23.75 lakh were also seized, it informed the court.
