With the increase in population, the demand for water in Surat city has also increased. This year the summer water demand is 1520 MLD, which was 1500 MLD in previous years. Due to increase in water demand, the water level of the causeway has decreased. Due to this, the quality of river water has also deteriorated.

Since the last week of March, the temperature has been in such dire condition. As the problem of green and foul smelling water has increased, an average of 800 cusecs of water is being released from the Ukai Dam for the past fortnight as a remedy. Due to inflow of water in the river, the water level of the causeway increased to more than 5 meters on Thursday. It reached 5.40 meters on the evening of April Water quality of Tapi river will improve partially in next few days. Demand for water increases in summer. At the same time, for the purpose of cleaning Tapi river, the hydraulic department had coordinated with the irrigation department, which had previously constructed water dams. So, as a good result of this integration, a quantity of pure water has been released from the Ukai Dam in the Tapi River passing through the center of the city.
