SLUG: PARTY REVAMP PROJECT
Ahmedabad: Ahead of the Congress’ nationwide organisational revamp, whose pilot project is being launched from Gujarat, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi chaired two crucial meetings in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. He outlined the process of empowering District Congress Committees (DCCs) and warned that leaders who are not committed will be denied posts in the party setup.
Gandhi is set to address party workers at Modasa town in Aravalli district on Wednesday, even as party observers begin selecting the district president for Aravalli through a consultation process. The meeting was attended by AICC general secretaries KC Venugopal and Mukul Wasnik, along with senior leaders from Gujarat.
During the coordination committee meeting held at the Circuit House in Shahibaug, Gandhi said he will personally evaluate the contribution of state leaders. “Every senior leader will be assigned a specific task to achieve the party’s stated objective for winning the 2027 Gujarat assembly election. Those who work with commitment will be promoted, while those who do not show commitment will not get party posts,” said a leader who attended the coordination committee.
Sources added that Gandhi told those present in the meeting that leaders who become active only ahead of elections will be denied tickets. Only those who constantly remain in touch with people will be considered for tickets for the 2027 election. “Gandhi said that DCC presidents whose work is exemplary will also be considered for posts of ministers if the Congress wins the 2027 election,” sources added.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi held an “orientation meeting” with the AICC and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) observers and offered guidance on the selection of presidents of 41 district units (33 districts and 8 cities) in Gujarat, said local leaders.
State Congress leaders said on Tuesday evening that the process of selecting DCC presidents in Gujarat will be concluded by May 31. “The team of observers will visit each of the 41 district units between April 23 and May 8. The focus of the visits will be to take into account various factors like social equations, geographical location, and the like,” former state president Jagdish Thakor said.
The decision to appoint and empower DCC presidents was taken at the recently concluded AICC meeting in Ahmedabad on April 9. Gandhi then said that DCC chiefs will be the foundation of the party’s organisational setup.
