Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court granted temporary bail under police escort for seven days to Tathya Patel, an accused in the Iskcon flyover accident, so that he could be present during his mother’s surgeryscheduled for Monday. Patel has been behind bars since July 2023 after his speeding car ran into a crowd gathered on the Iskcon flyover over SG Road, killing nine persons. He was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving and other offences under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.He was denied regular bail since his arrest.Patel filed an application with the trial court seeking temporary bail, stating that his mother, Nilamben Patel, was suffering from pain in her neck, waist and left leg, and was facing difficulties in performing her daily routine. She was advised to undergo a surgery, which is scheduled for May 12. He is her only child and wanted him to take care of her during her treatment.The trial court rejected Patel’s application on May 6 after the prosecution objected to it, saying there were other family members to take care of his mother. This brought him to the high court, where Justice M R Mengdey ordered on Friday to release him on bail for seven days.For the bail, Tathya was told to furnish a personal bond of Rs 5,000 and a surety of equal amount. He was ordered to be released with a police escort comprising a head constable and two constables, the expenditure for which was to be borne by him.
