Ahmedabad: Gujarat continued to improve its agricultural productivity, ranking third nationally in spices production with a gross value of output (GVO) of Rs 14,700 crore in 2023-24, according to the recently released ‘Statistical Report on Value of Output from Agriculture and Allied Sectors (2011-12 to 2023-24)’ by the Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation. Gujarat remained dominant in fibre crops, primarily cotton, retaining the top spot with a production value of Rs 24,900 crore. Gujarat’s spices sector too recorded exceptional growth, with GVO increasing by 161%. Other crops also recorded significant growth during this period. Pomegranate saw an 8.5-fold increase, with GVO rising from Rs 305 crore to Rs 2,897 crore. In oilseeds, Gujarat narrowly lost its top national position to Rajasthan, ranking second with a production value of Rs 29,100 crore compared to Rajasthan’s Rs 30,600 crore in 2023-24. Gujarat’s oilseeds sector grew by 31% during the review period. Soybean emerged as a standout performer among oilseeds, with its GVO rising from Rs 72 crore in 2011-12 to Rs 806 crore in 2023-24.
