With the sun shining mellow for most part of the day, people braved the chill with heavy woollens, skull caps, ear muffs and of course, piping hot tea, seasonal savouries and small bonfires. The India meteorological department (IMD) has forecast Saturday’s minimum temperature to be 15 degrees. “Rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3 degrees during the next 48 hours. Thereafter, no large change is very likely over the region,” it said.
At 6 degrees, Naliya recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state, followed by Kandla at 9.5 degrees besides Rajkot and Deesa both at 10.7 degrees. Due to the impact of the Western Disturbance, the past week saw several days with higher-than-normal temperatures, which fell to about 12 degrees on Tuesday. The minimum and maximum temperatures roller-coastering during the past fortnight have also led to a rise in viral infections, said physicians in the city. Dr Maharshi Desai, an internal medicine specialist, said that influenza A and B are prevalent. Patients typically show symptoms of low-grade fever, cough, cold and throat infection. “It is affecting those with low immunity more,” he said.
“After Uttarayan, we often see a spike in cases of throat infection where the voice turns hoarse and is accompanied by incessant cough. We recommend good hydration and rest,” said physician Dr Pragnesh Vachcharajani. Experts added that symptoms generally last from three to five days and severe cases are very few.
