Ahmedabad: A 24-year-old woman was booked on Saturday for killing her two-year-old son after she allegedly jumped with him into the Sabarmati. Their bodies were found on Jan 15.
According to an FIR filed with Sabarmati Riverfront (West) police by a woman assistant sub-inspector, Rinkal Desai, city police received a message on Jan 15, 2025, about a body floating in the Sabarmati near Chandranagar Sports Plaza. After receiving the message, a police officer on duty proceeded to the location.
Fire brigade personnel retrieved the bodies of a woman and a child near Ghat number 11 under Sardar Bridge. A mobile was also found at the ghat that led the cops to contact Kalpesh Solanki, a resident of Nikol.
He arrived at the spot and identified the deceased as his wife, Sheetal Solanki, 24, and their two-year-old son, Tejas. Kalpesh said he was at his relative’s house for the kite festival while his wife and son were at home. He tried to call his wife in the evening, but the call did not connect.
He said he had been looking for them when he received a call from the cops, informing him of the incident. He stated that his wife might have taken this step for personal reasons.
Cops conducted an inquest and sent the bodies for postmortem at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. A case of accidental death was registered. The investigation confirmed that Sheetal had left home with her son without informing anyone.
Police concluded that she jumped into the river after tying her son to herself with a dupatta.
She was booked for murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. This incident adds to the concerning statistics of bodies recovered from the Sabarmati. In 2024, 158 bodies were retrieved — 138 men, 19 women and one child, averaging recovery of one body every second day.
