Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) medical college in Gandhinagar has terminated the services of four professors, triggering widespread discontent within the medical fraternity. The dismissals were attributed to alleged dereliction of duties.
The GMERS CEO announced the termination of employment for four medical professionals, including one female doctor. Two of the affected professors were serving on 12-month contracts, whilst the other two held ad-hoc positions. Officials cited unsatisfactory departmental performance as the reason for their dismissal. The professors received notification of their termination in the afternoon.
The Teachers’ Association has voiced strong opposition to these dismissals. Association representatives attempted to meet with the health minister following their discussion with the CEO. However, due to the minister’s unavailability, the matter is scheduled for discussion next Monday after the holiday period. The association maintains that proper protocol requires issuing notices and seeking explanations before implementing such severe measures.
The abrupt dismissals have raised concerns about future recruitment at GMERS-run medical colleges, which already face staffing shortages. Sources within the medical community suggest that the current GMERS CEO struggles with managing staff performance effectively. Additionally, frequent leadership changes at the CEO level have contributed to operational challenges. The controversy surrounding these dismissals is expected to intensify in the coming period.
