Ahmedabad sees surge in pet dog registrations | Ahmedabad News

Ahmedabad: The cattle nuisance control department (CNCD) of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) started the online registration process for pet dogs in the city from Jan 1. Between Jan 1 and Jan 4, 500 owners registered 581 pet dogs, according to AMC officials. The western areas of Ahmedabad saw the highest registration with 365 dogs, while the eastern area had 216 registrations. In the west zone, 135 dogs were registered, with German Shepherds, Labradors, and Siberian Huskies being the most noted breeds. In the northwest zone, 133 dogs were registered, including Pomeranians, German Shepherds, Labradors, and Golden Retrievers.
Officials from the AMC reported that in the western zone, 135 dogs were registered in areas like Ranip, Sola, Memnagar, Vasna, and Usmanpura. In the northwest zone, areas like Bopal, Gota, Hebatpur, and Shela saw dog registrations. In the southwest zone, 97 dogs were registered by owners from Vejalpur, Sarkhej, Prahladnagar, and Makarba. Additionally, 20 dogs were registered in the central zone, 91 in the eastern zone, 40 in the northern zone, and 65 in the southern zone.
To increase dog registrations, awareness programmes will be conducted by the civic body. In the coming days, a list of veterinary practitioners for dog vaccinations will be posted on the AMC website. Arrangements for rabies vaccination at various sterilisation centres for pet dogs are also planned. Initially, the online registration process for pet dogs has been started in the city, and in the second phase, RFID tagging and licensing will be implemented.
For online registration, the module created by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation requires applicant’s name; applicant’s email ID, mobile number, and address; applicant’s photograph/door owner’s photograph; applicant’s Aadhaar card, electricity bill, property tax bill, PAN card, or rental agreement if not the property owner; dog’s name, breed, gender, age; photo of the place where the dog is kept, dog’s photo; and the number of dogs.
The central govt’s health department has set a target to make cities rabies-free by 2030. To implement this, a Rabies-Free City Action Plan will be enacted, which includes a new policy. This policy will determine the responsibilities of pet owners, requiring mandatory online registration and annual vaccination certificates. Additionally, designated dog feeding spots and restricted areas where pet dogs cannot be taken will be established.
