NEW DELHI: Amid the controversy triggered by a little-known Hindu outfit claiming that a temple exists below the Ajmer Sharif dargah, PM Modi on Thursday handed over the ‘chadar’ that would be offered at the dargah on his behalf during Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, continuing a tradition that he has followed ever since he assumed the top office in 2014.
Modi handed over the ceremonial ‘chadar’ to minority affairs minister Kiren Rijiju. “PM Narendra Modi ji presented the chadar that would be offered on his behalf at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah on the Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. This gesture reflects his deep respect for India’s rich spiritual heritage and the enduring message of harmony and compassion,” Rijiju said in a post on X while sharing a picture of the chadar. The minister is expected to present the chadar on Jan 4.
Sharing Rijiju’s post, the PM conveyed his greetings on the Urs. “May this occasion bring happiness and peace into everyone’s lives,” he said on X.
A Rajasthan court had recently accepted a petition submitted by Hindu Sena to conduct a survey to look into the veracity of the claim that the dargah was built atop the ruins of a Shiva temple that was destroyed by Muslim rulers. The petition led SC to issue a blanket stay on all temple versus mosque suits pending in courts.
