AMTS to add 225 new electric buses in 2025-26 | Ahmedabad News


Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) plans to add 225 new electric buses to its existing fleet in 2025-26. This was approved by the standing committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), which also gave the nod to the AMTS’s budget of Rs 682 crore for 2025-26 on Monday.
This represents a Rs 40.5 crore increase from the 2024-25 budget of Rs 641.50 crore. AMTS recorded a Rs 410 crore loss in 2024-25, with projections indicating it to widen further to Rs 437 crore in the next fiscal year. According to AMC, the AMTS anticipates revenue of Rs 238 crore for 2025-26, while expenditure is estimated at Rs 682 crore. This would include Rs 675 crore in revenue expenses and Rs 7 crore in capital expenses. The AMC will provide a loan of Rs 437 crore to address the deficit. No specific provisions for passengers were included in the budget. The 2025-26 draft budget outlines operations of 1,113 buses and a multimodal transport hub at the regional transport office (RTO). AMTS will acquire 60 AC electric buses and 60 mini AC electric buses. In total, 225 new electric buses will be introduced.
Additional plans include 800 stainless steel smart bus shelters with ETA technology and 300 mini shelters supported by MLA and MP grants. The approved budget also included a refreshment counter at the Lal Darwaja bus terminal. Jamalpur will accommodate parking and an e-charging station for 100 buses each. Ghuma will see the construction of an integrated model terminal. Workers will receive free travel passes for AMTS buses, supported by an Rs 18 crore state govt grant. AMTS services will extend to the area falling under the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda), backed by an Rs 15 crore grant from Auda.
