Two subjects proved to be nemeses in this year’s Class 12 exams, leaving students with some element-ary problems. Chemistry in the science stream and statistics in the general stream saw the maximum failures — over 16,400 and over 7,500 respectively. Next toughest in the Science stream was physics, with 15,127 students out of 100,494 failing.
In chemistry, 16,248 out of 100,473 candidates failed to find the right formula for success. Biology showed better results with a 91.77% success rate, with 5,275 failures from 64,083 students. The mathematics result of 94.87% indicated good number-crunching skills. Of 36,405, 1,868 could not clear the subject. As many as 2,191 students were unable to crack the computer science exam, while 1,080 bit the dust at the English (second language) hurdle.
In the general stream, 7,556 could not clear statistics, 6,004 failed accountancy, and 5,138 found English a tough nut to crack. Other subjects showing failures were economics (4,722), organisation of commerce (4,170), philosophy (2,595), computer (2,757), psychology (1,338), sociology (1,085), Sanskrit (1,446), Gujarati first language (1,189), geography (633) and Hindi (371).
