Ahmedabad: While some students excelling in sports receive scholarships to study in various US-based colleges and universities, a city-based youth, currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in biological science, has secured a scholarship of about $5,000 per semester based on his inclusion in the esports team of his college.
Nisarg Patel, son of Engineer Samir and Dr Sangita Patel, got into gaming when he was in Class 6.
“My father, an avid gamer, encouraged me to take it up. Even during the board exam years, I would play a bit to unwind. When I went to the US for studies, my first university was the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). Here, I got to know that there are teams for esports and it’s an organised activity complete with coaches and managers,” said Patel, who was recently in the city.
Last semester, he transferred to Boston-based Fisher College, and his first attempt was to find the esports team. tnn
