Construction dust in South Bopal nightmare for 68-yr-old resident | Ahmedabad News

Ahmedabad: Sixty-eight-year-old Kumudba Zala has been enduring redness of eyes and chronic coughing, lasting up to six months. A resident of South Bopal in Ahmedabad, she says that dust from perennial construction activity has been a nightmare for her for the past many years.
“It was during Diwali 2023 that I was rushed to the hospital when I began gasping for breath. It was there that I was diagnosed with bronchial asthma and prescribed medicines. Sometimes my cough does not subside for up to six months,” said Zala, a housewife. Kumudba said she has been enduring dust-related allergic reactions for several years. “I need to wear a mask even while frying snacks inside the house. While I try to keep the house dust-free, a lot of dust is in the air. Ever since we moved into our house in South Bopal 11 years ago, construction activity has been going on in the vicinity,” she said.
She said that she experiences a marked improvement in her bronchial asthma whenever she leaves the city.
“In June last year, I visited the US and faced no breathing problems whatsoever. We also visited Dubai earlier and I did not face any health problems there as well. Surely, the authorities can do a lot to make the city more livable and dust-free,” she said.
Kumudba said that people who already live with allergies are most vulnerable to dust conditions. “Despite taking all necessary precautions, allergic reactions like redness of eyes and coughing get intensified because of the dust in the city’s air,” she said.
