Ahmedabad: As monsoon lashes Ahmedabad, the city’s chronic struggle with waterlogging is once again under the spotlight. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has officially identified 147 waterlogging hotspots ahead of the 2025 monsoon, up from the 125 announced last year. Of these, 10 locations see water stagnate for more than five hours after rainfall, raising serious concerns for residents, traffic, and safety.In the western area of the city, there were two spots in Thaltej ward’s Bopal and Ghuma areas, two in Gota, and one in Bodakdev where water does not recede for over five hours. In the eastern area, one spot in Naroda, three in Saraspur-Rakhial, and one in Bapunagar face similar issues.The most severe case is Hirabaug in Paldi, where rainwater can accumulate up to 3 feet. At least 11 spots across the city have water depths exceeding 2 feet, disrupting daily life and posing health and safety risks. Areas like Ekta Nagar in Danilimda, Satyamnagar Vegetable Market in Amraiwadi, Patel Mill Road and Fire Brigade Road in Gomtipur, Madhumalti Apartments in Nikol, Navrang Circle, Paliyadnagar and Amin Choktha in Naranpura, Punitnagar Railway Crossing in Ramol, and Makarba Police Headquarters in Sarkhej are among the worst-affected.Between Aug 25 and 27 last year, Ahmedabad received an average of 10 inches of rain, leading to waterlogging at over 300 locations. While water at most of the spots cleared within a hour, 157 spots remained waterlogged for longer, with 10 enduring inundation for one to four days. This event added 32 new waterlogging spots, increasing the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) initial July 2024 list of 125 to 157. New problem areas emerged in Saraspur, Rakhial, Makarba, Vejalpur, Bopal, Ghuma, and Danilimda.Of the 147 spots, the East Zone has the most with 39 spots. followed by the North West Zone (32), North Zone (24), West Zone (22), South Zone (15), Central Zone (8), And South West Zone (7).The AMC is spending crores to tackle these issues. Following unseasonal rain on May 7, 2025, which again caused waterlogging, the water and sewerage committee provided an update on May 12. They approved 36 projects worth Rs 841.45 crore, with 29 projects (worth Rs 644.34 crore) already underway and six more (worth Rs 42.11 crore) awaiting approval. Additionally, a Rs 155 crore project tender has been floated. However, it is unlikely most of these projects will be completed before the monsoon season begins.
