Far-right Dutch leader Geert Wilders denounced the attack on Israelis in Amsterdam on November 8 calling it “totally unacceptable.”
Wilders took to X to express his concern on the matter as he wrote, “Looks like a Jew hunt in the streets of Amsterdam. Arrest and deport the multicultural scum that attacked Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters in our streets. Ashamed that this can happen in The Netherlands. Unacceptable.”
Riots erupted in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam on Thursday evening ahead of the Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israeli football club).
Israeli fans were allegedly attacked by pro-Palestine supporters with several left injured.
After the attacks on fans, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered rescue planes to help Maccabi Tel Aviv fans get back to the nation on priority. Netanyahu has reportedly spoken to the Israeli embassy in Amsterdam before the decision was taken on Friday (Nov 8) morning.
European football’s governing body – UEFA is yet to speak on the issue with actions soon expected. A similar incident earlier this year took place when Israel was set to play Scotland in the Nations League. Due to fan tension, the fixture was played behind closed doors to avoid any violence.
‘We can’t accept this’
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticised the attack on Israelis as he said, “First of all, this puts us and them, the free countries and the Netherlands, in danger. This endangers not only us but also them. But first of all, we need to deal with the danger to us. We cannot accept this.”
On Friday Netanyahu said that the 86th anniversary of Kristallnacht was marked on the streets of Amsterdam after overnight attacks on Israeli soccer supporters.
Netanyahu visited the Foreign Affairs Ministry situation room to manage and monitor developments and met with officials.
