Ahmedabad: The in charge police commissioner of the city, Sharad Singhal, on Thursday issued a notification prohibiting the flying and catching of kites on public roads during the Uttarayan festival.
“In the entire area under the jurisdiction of the Ahmedabad city police commissioner, in connection with the Uttarayan festival, from Jan 10 to Jan 31, no person shall fly kites in a manner that causes injury or fear to any person on public roads, nor shall anyone run on public roads to catch kites. This prohibition is hereby enforced,” reads the notification issued on Thursday and made public on Friday.
The order, issued under the authority granted in the Gujarat Police Act, prohibits certain activities that could pose risks to public safety on city roads. Violators of the order will face penalties under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section and the Gujarat Police Act for violation of the city police commissioner’s notification.
The directive empowers police officers from the rank of constable to joint/additional police commissioner to register complaints against violators. This decision was taken to reduce the risk of road accidents and ensure the smooth flow of traffic during the festival, said the notification.
Later on Friday evening, the Gujarat DGP office also issued a public appeal saying that the National Green Tribunal has banned the use of Chinese manja, tukkal, and glass-coated thread. “Use of Chinese manja, tukkal, and glass-coated thread is very dangerous to individuals and birds, and its use is a punishable offence. We appeal to all citizens that if you have information about the production, sales, and use of Chinese manja, tukkal, and glass-coated thread, then dial 100 and 112 or visit your nearest police station,” reads the public appeal.
