Ahmedabad: A 43-year-old homemaker from Sector 28 in Gandhinagar filed a complaint against her husband, accusing him of dowry harassment and deliberate insult.
The woman told Gandhinagar police that following her marriage in 2005, they went to the US, where she had a daughter. “I returned to India and continued living with my husband and in-laws. As my daughter grew older, after 2010, my husband began to taunt me about giving birth to a daughter and started mentally torturing me. He pressured me to have a son.”
According to her statement to the police, her husband started arguments over trivial issues and demanded Rs 20 lakh as dowry from her parents. He confiscated her gold ornaments weighing 500 g, personal documents, share certificates, investment papers, and bank passbooks. She alleged that her husband threatened to throw her out of the house if she failed to get Rs 20 lakh from her father.
The woman further alleged that her husband had an illicit affair with her brother’s wife, leading to the latter’s divorce. “My husband physically assaulted me and used abusive language while demanding dowry, causing mental and physical harassment,” she stated in the police complaint.
She alleged that she was forced out of her residence last year, with threats of assault if she tried to return. Currently, she was living with her parents.
Police officials noted that the complainant was regularly sent to her parents’ home, while her husband stayed with her former sister-in-law. She told the police that her husband lived with her former sister-in-law because he wanted a male child.
