The state government has decided to attach the thalassemia certificate at the time of marriage registration.

Now in the coming days in Gujarat, husband and wife’s thalassemia certificate will have to be attached compulsorily at the time of marriage registration. The Gujarat government has taken this important decision in the coming days to prevent the increase of thalassemia in the state.

At the time of marriage registration, it has been made mandatory for the couple to attach a valid doctor’s certificate stating whether they have thalassemia or not. The state government has taken an important decision in the coming days to prevent the birth of children with thalassemia. The state government will make an official announcement about this decision in the coming days.

Notably, it is said about thalassemia that, if one of the male and female has thalassemia before marriage, the couple has a 25 percent chance of having a child with thalassemia. If both the male and female have thalassemia minor, the couple has a 50 percent chance of having a child with thalassemia major. Life expectancy of such a child is short. This is why the state government has decided to attach the thalassemia certificate at the time of marriage registration.

What is Thalassemia?

It is very important to have knowledge about thalassemia to eradicate the hereditary blood disease thalassemia, to spread awareness among the masses. Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder, in which the red blood cells and hemoglobin in the body become less than normal. A protein called hemoglobin is needed to transport oxygen throughout the body. If it is not made in the body or the amount is less than normal, then the child is likely to develop thalassemia disease, which can be known after blood test.

Measures to prevent thalassemia

The Gujarat government has been doing its best for the last 15 years to eradicate thalassemia from Gujarat. In this field, Gujarat has become a role model for other states with many innovative initiatives and systematic planning. The state government has started conducting thalassemia test of pregnant women visiting all government hospitals. So far, about seven lakh pregnant women have been tested in Gujarat, out of which more than 500 thalassemia-affected fetuses have been prevented from being born.

Remedies to avoid this disease

– Taking medicines on time and getting blood transfusions

  • Get it checked during pregnancy itself
  • Now-a-days blood test of boy-girl is done before marriage.

– Try to keep the patient’s hemoglobin up to 11 or 12.
