Gandhinagar: Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay was granted an extension of six months on Monday. He was scheduled to retire from service on Monday, June 30.The appointments committee of the Union cabinet approved a proposal from the Union home ministry on Monday to extend Sahay’s service for six months beyond his retirement date. Sahay will continue as DGP until Dec 31 this year. Subsequently, the Gujarat govt also issued an appropriate order later in the evening.The 1989-batch Gujarat cadre IPS officer was appointed as DGP in March 2023. He was given additional charge of the top post in the state police setup on Jan 31, 2023, following the retirement of former DGP Ashish Bhatia. On March 1, 2023, he received a regular appointment as state DGP.Sources informed that Sahay’s extension was expected as his tenure as the state’s top cop was largely non-controversial, and the political bosses in the govt were satisfied with his functioning.However, suspense prevailed over his extension through a major part of the day as Sahay’s extension order was not issued until late in the evening. Sources said that a ceremonial farewell was also planned at the Police Bhavan for the DGP, where there is a tradition of junior IPS officers pulling the outgoing DGP’s vehicle out of the Police Bhavan compound. However, according to sources, the DGP was orally informed of his extension just before the farewell could be held.
