Ahmedabad: With only 27 of about 225 colleges affiliated to Gujarat University (GU) sending details in response to the university’s plan to facilitate admissions twice a year, GU is planning to extend the deadline which expired on Friday.
The circular issued by GU on Jan 4 stated that it was planning to organise the admission process twice a year for arts, commerce and science faculties at the UG and PG levels from the academic year 2024-25. The twice-a-year admission process follows the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines and the National Education Policy of India 2020 (NEP 2020).
“During the second session of the 2024-25 academic year, starting in Jan 2025, students who missed the initial admission or have passed exams after the process will be admitted to available vacant seats at the end of the first session’s enrolment. Additional seats may be provided based on the number of applications received,” the circular mentions.
Asked about the reason behind the lukewarm response to the GU initiative, vice-president of the Gujarat State Principals Association, Star Payal Iyer said that the university did not take the colleges into confidence and also did not issue proper guidelines about the admission process. “The question now remains as to how many colleges are willing to join. There is no clarity on how the admission and studies will be conducted,” said Iyer, adding that GU should spell out the entire admission process — whether it will be online or conducted directly by the colleges.
