Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court on Friday granted five-day bail to Narayan Sai on humanitarian grounds to meet his father, Ashumal Harpalani alias Asaram, in Jodhpur under police escort, with the condition of not meeting their followers in a group. Since 2013, Sai was in Lajpore jail serving life imprisonment after his conviction in 2019 for rape and sodomy. Asaram was convicted to life imprisonment by Jodhpur and Gandhinagar courts in sexual assault cases and is serving his term in a Jodhpur prison. Since Asaram was on temporary bail for medical treatment, Sai sought 15-day bail to meet his father, who returned to Jodhpur on Friday only after treatment.Sai submitted that his father is 86 years old and ailing. For over 11 years, he has not met his father. The state govt and the victim’s counsel opposed his plea by citing an instance when the HC imposed a Rs 1 lakh fine on him for forging papers of his mother’s illness to get temporary bail. After the hearing, the bench of Justice Ilesh Vora and Justice P M Raval considered the peculiar circumstances in which the father and son, having been lodged in different jails, have not been able to meet for long. Considering the medical condition of Asaram, the court granted five-day bail to his son ‘on humanitarian grounds’. The court clarified that the police officials should grant the father-son privacy during their meeting.
