Ahmedabad: In a move aimed at expediting the disposal of long-pending cases, the Gujarat high court has decided to dedicate Wednesdays exclusively to hearing the oldest pending matters, starting from July 2. The two committees of the court decided that each of the HC benches should take up the 100 oldest cases once a week, and it received approval during a chamber meeting held on April 22. The HC’s registrar (judicial) mentioned this in a notification.According to this plan, the HC will prepare a new list of cases, known as the cause list, titled the ‘Wednesday Weekly List (WWL)’, and it will be published a week in advance. The list will feature the 100 oldest pending cases roster-wise, arranged strictly according to their registration date in the high court, irrespective of the case type or its current stage. The first such list will be published on June 25 for the hearings of such ‘targeted matters’ scheduled for July 2. All fresh matters, except for bail and quashing petitions, will be automatically shifted to the next working day if scheduled for a Wednesday. “Since Wednesdays will be dedicated solely to targeted matters, the first listing of fresh matters scheduled for Wednesdays (except for bail and quashing matters) will occur on the next working day of the court,” the notification reads.Certain types of old cases will be excluded from the WWL, including those where the hearing is over and judgments are reserved, those which are partly heard matters or where proceedings were stayed by the Supreme Court. Matters adjourned sine die by court order due to pendency before the apex court will also be excluded, the notification says. The HC has also notified all the lawyers representing private parties, govt lawyers and stakeholders about the listing of the oldest matters and the adjournment of other matters scheduled for Wednesday hearing by one day.Ahmedabad: In a move aimed at expediting the disposal of long-pending cases, the Gujarat high court has decided to dedicate Wednesdays exclusively to hearing the oldest pending matters, starting from July 2.
