Jantri: Govt estimates 3,300 crore windfall

Gandhinagar: With hiked jantri rates likely to be implemented, Gujarat govt has projected a significant Rs 3,300 increase in revenue from stamp duty and registration fee for the 2025-26 state budget announced last week.
Compared to a revised estimated income of Rs 16,500 crore from stamp duty and registrations for the current 2024-25 financial year, the state govt’s budgetary estimate on this income 2025-26 has been pegged at Rs 19,800 crore.
A senior official in the state finance department said, “While preparing budgetary estimates for 2025-26, we have solely considered ongoing revenue trends and existing jantri rates, as the state govt is yet to take a final decision on the proposed new jantri rates. Should the govt implement increased jantri rates, revenue from stamp duty and registration fees might exceed present budget estimates.”
The state revenue department concluded the process of gathering objections and suggestions for the new proposed revised jantri rates in Jan. “The revenue department has proposed a minimum doubling of existing jantri rates and in some cases, the proposed increase is by 2,000 times. It is for the govt to take a final decision and announce revised rates,” said a top official. Sources said, “It is expected that the govt will announce a minimum increase of at least 25% in jantri from the new financial year. In 2023, jantri rates were doubled after a comprehensive survey of prevailing market prices of land across the state.”
