US Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign office in Arizona was shot at by an unidentified individual on Monday (Sep 23), just a couple of weeks after Donald Trump survived another assassination attempt.
According to the Tempe Police Department, the Democratic National Committee office, situated near Southern Avenue and Priest Drive in Tempe, suffered gunfire damage after the incident. Fortunately, no one was inside the building at the time of the shooting.
“No one was inside the office during the overnight hours, but this raises concerns about the safety of those who work in that building, as well as those nearby,” the police said.
The investigators are analysing evidence collected at the scene and have beefed up the security for staff and others in the area.
The police are labelling the incident as a property crime at this stage as no one was present at the office during the incident.
“We are grateful to Tempe Police for coming quickly to the scene and are fortunate no one was present or injured,” said Sean McEnerney, the Arizona Democratic Party coordinated campaign manager.
Notably, it was the second incident of criminal damage at the Democrat office in as many weeks. On September 16, just after midnight, the front windows were shot with what appeared to be a BB gun or pellet gun.
Harris was last seen in Arizona in early August but her campaign held a campaign event in Tempe with gun control advocate Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.).
Throughout her campaign trail, Harris has called for the banning of assault weapons and for states to institute red flag laws.
“We’ve got to end the epidemic of gun violence in our country once and for all,” Harris said at one of her rallies.
Polls show Harris and Trump in a virtual tie in Arizona with just six weeks until Election Day. Meanwhile, Trump has rejected Harris’ proposal to square off for another presidential debate after the Democrat emerged victorious in the ABC News debate held earlier this month.
