Ahmedabad: A man who initially claimed to be robbed of Rs 10 lakh on a highway in Narol confessed to staging the entire incident to cover up financial distress. The city crime branch arrested him on Friday.
On April 9, around 4pm, Kiran Chunara, 25, reported that two unidentified men on a black motorcycle snatched a bag containing Rs 10 lakh and fled towards Vishala. A formal complaint was filed at Narol police station under BNS Section 304(2). Given the serious nature of the case, multiple teams from the city crime branch were deployed to trace the culprits.
However, inconsistencies emerged with CCTV footage from the scene showing no such motorcycle. Initial suspicion fell on Chunara himself. During detailed questioning at the crime branch, Chunara admitted to faking the robbery.
Chunara worked as a cash collection agent for a furniture firm in Prahladnagar. On the day of the incident, he collected Rs 10 lakh from New Cloth Market and Rakhial. Facing financial hardship and with a pregnant wife, he decided to keep the money and falsely informed his manager of a robbery.
Chunara hid the cash in an open ground near Komal Textile, adjacent to Savdhariya Farm on the Vishala-Narol road. The entire amount was recovered. He was handed over to Narol police for further legal action.
