Mango arrives early in city mkts | Ahmedabad News

Ahmedabad: Good news for mango lovers. The favourite summer fruit has marked an early arrival in the city. Over the past few days, around five tonnes — kesar from Ratnagiri and Alphonso from Kerala — have been arriving in Ahmedabad’s markets every day, traders say.
According to sources, this year’s mango season is expected to be a long one, and with strong arrivals. Adding to this sweet news is the likelihood of prices of this luscious fruit remaining lower than last year.
Prem Rohra, president of the Ahmedabad Wholesale Fruit Merchant Association, said, “There is an early arrival of mangoes in different parts. Therefore, we are seeing around five tonnes coming into the Ahmedabad market every day.” Traders say a bumper harvest is likely in all mango-producing states, due to which prices too may remain low throughout the season.”
Rohra called mango arrivals in Jan quite unusual. “Normally in Jan, the quantity landing in the city’s markets is small, but this year is different. A good stock is arriving from Ratnagiri and Kerala. Arrivals from Ratnagiri will be even stronger after Feb 15,” he said.
A leading trader said, “This year, we will see a longer mango season with good quality fruits coming in from Jan itself. The mangoes arriving currently in the markets taste good. We expect the demand to be good too,” he said, not wanting to be named.
According to the association, Alphonso, kesar, Lalbagh, badam and Totapuri varieties, priced between Rs 100 and Rs 650 a kg, are coming in. The mango belts of Junagadh and South Gujarat also have witnessed early flowering, and the yield is expected to be higher than the previous year.
