Ahmedabad: Despite a record 83.08% pass percentage in the Class 10 exams announced by the Gujarat Board on Thursday, mathematics and science subjects continue to pose major challenges for students—particularly basic mathematics.According to data released by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board(GSHSEB), 1,13,352 students failed in basic mathematics this year, a sharp increase from 1.04 lakh last year. In contrast, only 392 students failed in standard mathematics, which had a total of 60,605 candidates. With 60,213 passing, standard maths recorded a 99.35% pass rate.Science was another difficult subject, with 90,791 students failing out of 7,46,891 candidates, despite an overall pass percentage of 87.84%.Social science, on the other hand, had a much higher success rate of 93.78%.In the Gujarati first language exam, 6,26,893 students appeared, with 91.29% passing. In English first language, 98,695 students took the exam, of which 95,955 passed, resulting in a 97.26% pass rate. Notably, 14 students scored a perfect 100 in English as a second language.In terms of top scores, 99 students scored 99 out of 100 in Gujarati, while five students scored the highest mark in English first language—96. One student secured 98 marks in Gujarati second language.The growing number of failures in key subjects like basic mathematics and science, despite the overall improved pass rate, highlights the need for focused intervention and subject-specific support for students.
