Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad airport police on Wednesday filed a case against a woman, Kavita Patel from Mehsana, for allegedly forging a stolen passport of a man from Bihar to travel abroad.
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) police lodged a complaint on Wednesday under BNS section 336 (2) (forgery), 336(3) (whoever commits forgery, intending that the document or electronic record forged shall be used for the purpose of cheating), 338 (forgery of valuable security, will), 340(2) (forged document or electronic record and using it as genuine), and 54 (abettor present when offence is committed).
Prashmit Vaghela, an officer at SVPIA, stated in the complaint that on Aug 22, 2024, Patel presented an Indian passport P1944937, issued from Atlanta, USA, valid until Aug 8, 2032, during immigration. Checks revealed that the passport details matched those of Ishfaque Alam, born April 15, 1984, residing in Pakri, Nawada, Bihar. Alam had reported his passport missing on Dec 20, 2021.
Patel’s passport was seized for further verification. “Enquiry about the genuineness of the passport with the Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Ahmedabad revealed that the passport P1944937 was originally issued to Alam,” the complainant stated in the FIR.
Investigations showed that Patel travelled to the USA using her original passport K7743539 from Mumbai airport. During questioning, Patel disclosed obtaining her current passport (P1944937) from an unidentified agent in Atlanta but provided no further details about the agent.
“The incident took place in Aug 2024, but the official communication was received on Wednesday, and hence the complaint was registered now,” airport police inspector S G Khambhala said.
