New road to link barrage bridge and Sadar Bazaar

Ahmedabad: In a move to transform connectivity along the Sabarmati, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd has initiated construction of a barrage-cum-bridge that will link the powerhouse area to Sadar Bazaar. City planners have proposed opening a new 40-m wide road that will seamlessly connect the barrage-cum-bridge to Acher Road, using open land at the powerhouse without affecting any properties.
This new road will provide direct access from the turn near the metro station at Chimanlal Patel bridge to the barrage-cum-bridge — a six-lane structure being built for Rs 300 crore. The under-construction project, which is designed not only to ease traffic but also to store clean water for up to 15 days, will integrate with existing roads to form a bustling four-way intersection that links to hubs such as Motera Stadium and Jawahar Chowk.
An official from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said, “Once the project is complete, residents of western Ahmedabad will no longer have to travel to Shahibaug Dafnala for airport access.”
A 2 to 2.5-m footpath will also be constructed beneath the bridge, ensuring smooth pedestrian connectivity along both sides of the Sabarmati Riverfront.
The proposal for this new road will be presented before the standing committee on March 13.
According to the proposal, which falls under the Sabarmati TP Scheme No. 23 covering final plot numbers 872 and 613, the approval process will be conducted under Section 205 of the GPMAC Act, authorising the commissioner to proceed with the road opening and related expenses.
