Ahmedabad: A routine police investigation took a tragic turn when a govt vehicle carrying a police team from Ahmedabad’s Ramol police station crashed into a stationary canter truck on the Bharatmala Highway in Haryana. The impact killed three people — police constable Sunil Gamit, home guard jawan Ravindrasinh Kshatriya, and private driver Ghanshyam Bharwad — while police sub-inspector (PSI) J P Solanki sustained severe injuries. The accident occurred near Sakta Khera village, leaving authorities in shock as they pieced together the sequence of events.
The officers were en route to Ludhiana, Punjab, to conduct a punchnama in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) case when tragedy struck. Kunal Desai, the additional commissioner of police who is in Haryana, said, “The case involved an alleged kidnapping where both the victim and accused had recently returned, revealing that the girl had been taken to Ludhiana after being kidnapped. Based on their statements, the team was heading to Punjab for further legal formalities.”
PSI Solanki, the only survivor, is currently hospitalised and in a state of shock. A video of him has surfaced where he struggles to recall details of the trip, including who was in the vehicle with him or even the case they were investigating.
Haryana police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Meanwhile, senior officers from Ahmedabad have also reached the accident site. One major point of inquiry is why a private driver, Kanu Bharwad, was behind the wheel of a govt vehicle. Officials are looking into whether he was officially authorised to drive and how a home guard jawan and a private individual were accompanying the police team on an official assignment.
