Previously, AMC standing committee chairman Devang Dani allocated Rs 1 crore for a feasibility assessment of the underpass project. The heavily congested Rajpath-Rangoli Road, situated near Rajpath Club in Bodakdev ward, required traffic solutions.
The 3-km stretch from SG Highway terminates at the SP Ring Road, necessitating motorists to utilise the SP Ring Road and Bopal flyover to reach Bopal. The proposed underpass would have shortened the journey by 1-1.5 km. However, technical constraints resulted in the shelving of the project.
AMC sources attribute the project’s failure to lack of planning by the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority’s (AUDA’s) town planning division. The absence of proper road alignment between Bodakdev and Bopal across the SP Ring Road, coupled with the presence of underground drainage infrastructure, rendered the underpass construction unfeasible.
AUDA is currently developing a detailed project report for expanding the SP Ring Road into six lanes, incorporating nine flyovers and one underpass. While construction has commenced at the Sindhu Bhavan junction flyover, the underpass proposal was shelved due to technical limitations.
Box: Two flyovers proposals scrapped
In anticipation of the 2036 Olympic Games, Ahmedabad has identified seven roads to be developed into iconic roads. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) earmarked Rs 70 crore in its 2024-25 budget for constructing a flyover at Manasi Circle. However, this plan was abandoned to prevent traffic bottlenecks at adjacent intersections. The stretch from Keshavbagh to Pakwan crossroads was designated for the iconic road project. The previously conceived split flyover at Visat junction was cancelled due to concerns regarding future traffic patterns.
