The festivities spread across hotels, restaurants to farmhouses on the outskirts of the city, while approximately 6,000 police officials and personnel maintained strict surveillance.Security was also tightened at inter-state and inter-district borders.
“Vehicle-checking operations were carried out in all police station areas,” said Neeraj Badgujar, additional commissioner of police, Sector 1. “Places with high footfall were under the vigil of a DCP-level official. The vigilance was also extended to hotels, open plots, and farmhouses.”
Special teams were deployed to catch speedsters and those performing stunts on roads. More than 30 teams with breathalysers were also deployed.
Many Amdavadis, however, chose to stay home to beat the traffic and hustle-bustle of New Year as they celebrated the occasion with friends and family.
Rebecca Sudan Gonsalves, a behavioural communication trainer, attended a cosy gathering with friends and family. “We planned activities for both children and grown-ups. With 15 children around, the countdown was all the more exciting. Moreover, for us, it’s a double celebration since it’s a friend’s birthday as well. It has become a tradition for us to introduce our kids to new music and learn about theirs,” she said.
Some chose to escape to their favourite destinations outside the city.
“Every year, we escape the mundane routine and spend some time exploring a new place or just rejuvenating. This time around, our plans are all the same but without the travel. My wife and I decided to stay in and catch up on our favourite movies — both old and new,” said Ayyan Karmakar, an independent sustainability consultant.
Esha Shah, a corporate trainer, marked the occasion by making pizzas and strawberry cream for dinner with family. “My husband and I both love cooking. As we travel extensively, it was our idea to stay in and enjoy the leisurely side of life,” she said. For Dhaval Darjee, a city-based professional, the day was for starting the year with a clean slate. “I spent the day repotting my plants and jotting down my to-do list for this year,” he said.
