Ahmedabad: A controversy erupted at Gujarat University (GU) when student activists discovered poor food quality at a temporary canteen, which was hurriedly set up ahead of an impending inspection by NAAC.
Following an investigation spearheaded by NSUI-Youth Congress representative Subhan Saiyed, laboratory analyses were presented to the vice-chancellor. The findings indicated that key ingredients, including tomato sauce, butter, and masala (spices), did not meet the required quality parameters.
The institution, which operates without a permanent catering system, established the interim canteen at its distribution centre to offer affordable meals. The situation raised health concerns, as thousands of students depend solely on this facility for their daily meals.
“Students have no alternative but to rely on this substandard facility,” said Saiyed. The student organisation lodged A formal complaint with the vice-chancellor, requesting autonomous testing of the food specimens.
