In Gujarat, a red alert has been sounded for Kutch on Sunday and Monday, signalling a severe heatwave, according to the IMD forecast. Rajkot and Morbi are under an orange alert for these two days. Ahmedabad continued to sizzle on Saturday, registering 42°C — a sharp 3.6 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature in the city hovered around 23°C, the minimum temperature was almost at par. The IMD predicts that temperatures will likely remain in the same range on Sunday.
The forecast mentioned a rise in maximum temperatures by 2 degrees celsius during the next three days. Thereafter, no large change is expected during subsequent days over the region. Maximum temperatures are very likely to be in the range of 40-43 degrees celsius over parts of the Gujarat region and Saurashtra-Kutch. The forecast also indicated high heat and high humidity in coastal areas of the state.
On Sunday and Monday, yellow alerts have been issued for Porbandar, Junagadh, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Patan, and Mehsana. By Tuesday, Kutch will again be on orange alert, while yellow alerts will cover Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Gandhinagar, Rajkot, Junagadh, and Morbi.
City physicians reported a steady rise in heat-related illnesses in outpatient departments. Common complaints include diarrhoea, fever, and body ache, while viral infections — featuring flu-like symptoms such as runny nose, cough, phlegm, and headaches — remain prevalent. Doctors advised limiting exposure to direct sun, especially for children and senior citizens, and emphasised the importance of staying well-hydrated to combat the oppressive heat.
