‘Shame on you’: Protesters disrupt Netanyahu’s Oct 7 memorial ceremony speech

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to pause his speech at a memorial ceremony organised in remembrance of the October 7 attack and the Israel-Hamas war’s civilian casualties when the bereaved families started shouting “Shame on you!”.

A heckled Netanyahu stood motionless in the middle of the ceremony as members of the audience interrupted him for more than one minute in Jerusalem.

In the live broadcast of the speech, one of the protesters was heard shouting, “My father was killed”, while others shouted, “Shame on you!”

The administration of Netanyahu has been facing public and diplomatic pressure to take more significant steps to finalise a deal with Hamas and release the captives who are still in Gaza.

After the authorities removed the hecklers from the event, the prime minister again started his speech.

Israel to push for restart of negotiations over hostage release deal

Israeli spy chief David Barnea will be travelling to Doha on Sunday (Oct 27) to hold talks which will be aimed at restarting negotiations on the Gaza hostage release deal.

The Israeli government has been appealed by several Western leaders and families of hostages to broker an agreement after Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar’s death earlier this month.

According to some analysts, Sinwar was the main obstacle in the agreement which will pave the way for the release of 97 hostages still held in Gaza.

Netanyahu has also been criticised by some for obstructing mediation in the truce. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant earlier said that the military action will not only help achieve the aim of the war which is to bring back the hostages.

“Not all objectives can be achieved through military operations alone… To realise our moral duty to bring our hostages home, we will have to make painful concessions,” said Gallant, in another speech.
