Ahmedabad: The state has received overall 115% more rainfall compared to normal in June, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data on Monday. Among the districts with the highest departure from normal, Sabarkantha had 269% excess rain, followed by 218% in Anand, 193% in Panchmahal, 182% in Chhota Udepur and 168% each for Narmada and Aravalli, among others.IMD data indicates that out of 33 districts (according to the IMD website), 29 districts recorded 60% or more excess rainfall. Only four districts — Patan, Rajkot, Porbandar and Gir Somnath — recorded 22% to 51% excess rainfall than the long-term average. The bountiful rain from the start of the month, including both monsoon and pre-monsoon showers, caused deluge in several parts of the state, including Banaskantha, Jamnagar and Surat, with more than 100mm of rainfall in 24 hours. Several deaths have also been reported due to rains this season.“This year, the state has recorded both pre-monsoon and monsoon showers across the regions. Traditionally, June is not considered the month with high rainfall for the state. But this year, the conditions were different with a strong trough extending from Arabian Sea to Bay of Bengal and multiple low-pressure areas over Rajasthan and Gujarat that gave ample rainfall,” said a Met department official. The State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) data had indicated that it has been the highest rainfall for June in at least past 10 years for the state. As of Monday, the state has already received about one-third of its normal rainfall in a matter of 15 to 20 days. The SEOC data indicated that since 2022, the state has recorded above 100% seasonal rainfall. So far, one taluka has received more than 1,000mm of rainfall, whereas 31 others have recorded 501 to 1,000 mm. In all, only 40 out of 252 talukas have recorded less than 125mm rainfall till Monday, according to data.Out of 206 dams in the state, 13 are at full capacity, whereas 33 are more than 70% filled to their capacity due to good rains in the state.
