Gandhinagar: Separate lanes for different vehicle types, access control for safe and better traffic management are the highlights of the SP Ring Road’s Rs 2,100 crore redevelopment plan. The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda), which will convert the SP Ring Road into a six-lane road, is also likely to create dedicated lanes for two-three wheelers, four-wheelers and heavy vehicles on both sides, along with access control for better traffic management.
Chief minister Bhupenda Patel, who also holds the urban development portfolio, approved Rs 2,100 crore as the tentative cost for the road’s revamp. Auda is also considering provision for the metro as part of the redevelopment.
The presentation on the six-laning, made at the recent meeting, included traffic details, reasons for the road’s capacity enhancement and considerations of future traffic growth. It has been proposed to expand the main road to accommodate six lanes and the service roads to three or four lanes, with sustainable measures for a green highway.
Considering the estimated project cost, it was decided to prepare tenders based on the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) after comparing the existing EPC, HAM, and BOT models.
This approach aims to complete the project within the stipulated time frame. The capacity enhancement and junction-free development of the Sardar Patel Ring Road is expected to also significantly reduce traffic issues, lead to fuel savings and environmental conservation, accelerate growth of peri-urban areas around Ahmedabad, and facilitate smoother interstate and intrastate transportation by connecting key national and state highways.
