Gandhinagar: Gujarat ranks lowest among all states and Union territories (UT) in terms of crimes against women as a ratio of the total offences registered in a state or UT, revealed a report released by the Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI).
According to the report “Men and Women in India, 2024,” only 1.48% of all the crimes registered in Gujarat in the year 2022 were against women. Sikkim, Assam, and West Bengal topped the table as 21.86%, 20.52%, and 19.24% of the total crimes committed in these states were against women. The report also stated that Gujarat accounted for 1.74% of the total crimes committed against women across the country. Quoting from the ‘Crime in India’ reports of the union home ministry, the report stated that in 2022, 524,103 cases were reported in Gujarat, of which 7,731 were against women. Cruelty by a woman’s husband and his relatives was the biggest contributor to crimes against women in the state.
In 2022, 352 cases of cybercrimes against women were registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Information Technology (IT) Act. Of these, three were of cyber blackmailing and threatening, 43 of cyber pornography, 48 of cyberstalking and bullying, seven were of fake profiles, and 251 were for other cybercrimes.
