The incident took place late on Wednesday night in the Gareebnagar locality in Bapunagar, which is within walking distance of the ACP H Division office and centrally located between the Rakhial and Bapunagar police stations.
Local sources said that two men, Fazal Shaikh and Sameer Shaikh, resorted to violence and attacked people with swords to instil fear among them. “Around two months ago, a rival gang of Fazal and Salim attacked the duo’s aides in Rakhial. They came out openly on Wednesday night and began screaming and wielding swords in the area of their rival Salman Shaikh. Salman was jailed for attempted murder and recently jumped parole,” said a local resident.
After the incident, two separate complaints were filed with the Rakhial and Bapunagar police stations. Senior police officials arrived at the scene at night after learning about the incident. Sameer and Fazal were arrested by the cops on Thursday.
Salman’s brother, Saddam Shaikh, a photographer, suffered sword injuries in the attack. According to police and local sources, 11 people suffered injuries, but they did not file any police complaints. “The local people here have a fear of these goons who are hand in glove with local cops,” said a local social worker.
Inspector A D Gamit of Bapunagar police confirmed the incident and said that two FIRs of attempt to murder and rioting have been filed with Rakhial and Bapunagar police.
