Ahmedabad: A boy and a girl, both aged around 18, died by suicide by jumping into the Sabarmati River near the Khanpur area of the city on Sunday evening, said officers of Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) and the city police.
An AFES officer said, “A couple jumped into the river from the walkway of the Sabarmati Riverfront near Cama Hotel in Khanpur. Both are aged between 17 and 20. A medico of 108 ambulance declared them dead.” In-charge inspector of Sabarmati Riverfront (West) police, V J Chavda, said that the couple jumped from the eastern side and their bodies were washed away to the western side.
“A security guard watched them holding hands and preparing to jump. He shouted at them, but before he could stop them, they jumped into the river. He called the emergency services, and within 10 minutes, a rescuer from the city fire brigade reached the spot. However, the couple could not be rescued,” said Chavda. He said that police did not find any identification documents or phones on the couple, so their identities could not be determined. “The only thing that can help identify the girl is a tattoo with ‘Priyanshi’ written on her hand. We cannot determine their exact age, but they could be minors,” said Chavda. Sabarmati Riverfront Police registered a case of accidental death.
Earlier on Sunday morning, the body of a man was found in the river near the Saptarshi crematorium side in Jamalpur.
