President Joe Biden on Monday (October 28) cast his vote in the upcoming US presidential election by participating in early voting in Delaware, his home state. He voted in support of Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, who is competing against Republican Donald Trump.
The president joined many Americans opting to vote ahead of Election Day, scheduled for next Tuesday. Biden voted at an early voting centre in New Castle, Delaware.
A group of first-time voters was present at the Department of Elections building in New Castle, where they cast their votes alongside the president, according to the White House.
Arriving around noon, Biden waited in line with over 100 other voters and chatted with them as he waited for his turn. Reporters with Biden noted that he waited approximately 40 minutes before casting his early ballot.
“Joseph Biden, now voting,” a poll worker announced as she checked in the president at the New Castle location, reported The Hill.
Biden presented his driver’s licence, signed his name digitally, and proceeded to a voting booth. Following him, the first-time voters received cheers as their names were called.
When Biden left the polling site, a reporter asked him if he found the experience bittersweet. “This is sweet,” he replied.
Asked if he believed Vice President Kamala Harris would defeat former President Trump in next week’s election, Biden said, “I think we will.”
Vice President Harris has yet to vote but shared with reporters on Friday that it was a priority for her “in the coming days.”
Her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, voted last week with his family in St. Paul.
Biden was initially running for a second term but dropped out of the campaign in July after facing pressure from fellow Democrats following a poor debate showing against Trump. He endorsed Vice President Harris when he stepped away from the race.
