Ahmedabad rural police said those arrested have been identified as Shaitansinh Ravat (22), Mangalsinh Ravat (27), both residents of Rajsamand in Rajasthan, and Shankarsinh Chauhan (32), a Beawar resident, who was at the wheel.
A complaint was filed on Saturday by Shamji’s colleague Bhairam Makwana who stated that on Friday, he, Shamji and another GRD member Suresh Raman with traffic jamadar Diwansingh Kanu were directing large vehicles entering Sanand town to use the bypass.
According to the complaint, around 1.45pm a truck (GJ-12-CT-2197) sped into Sanand town, its driver, Shankarsinh, ignoring Shamji’s signal to stop.
Shamji and Makwana both followed the truck on their bikes. Shankarsinh allegedly continued driving despite the two telling him to stop, and hit Shamji’s bike causing him grievous injuries. The driver then sped off.
Cops said the driver was making desperate attempts to get out of the district since the incident, but the vehicle’s details shared by Ahmedabad rural police helped other GRD jawans apprehend him on Monday from the area near Sanand bus stop.
According to a notification issued, police have been diverting heavy vehicles to the bypass to ease traffic congestion inside Sanand town. The three accused have been booked under BNS Sections 103(1) (murder), 121(2) (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 324(2) (mischief), 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way), and the Motor Vehicles Act.
