Ahmedabad: While Uttarayan is traditionally celebrated with kites soaring high, terraces bustling with laughter, and plates brimming with ‘undhiyu’, ‘jalebi’, and ‘chikki’, a growing number of Gujaratis are taking to the skies in a different way this year — by travelling. The long weekend coinciding with Uttarayan has ignited a travel frenzy, with many choosing holidays over kite-flying.
With Saturday and Sunday forming the natural weekend and Tuesday and Wednesday designated as holidays, a clever adjustment of Monday’s leave created a coveted five-day getaway opportunity. Gujaratis, known for their love of exploration, seized the chance, flocking to both domestic and international destinations.
“Most bookings are being made by those above 45-50 years of age,” said Virendra Shah, former chairman of the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI). “Many in this age group are looking for a break from their routines, opting for relaxing holidays and quality time away from the every day grind.”
Uttarayan is certainly not the time of the year for extensive travel, but leveraging the long weekend, a lot of people are taking short and long road trips according to their conveniences.
Road trips and flights to destinations like Rajasthan, Gir, Diu, Alibaug, and Lonavala are especially popular this season. Scenic locales and serene resorts in Kerala are also witnessing a surge in demand, as travellers seek rejuvenating escapes. These spots cater perfectly to those looking to unwind amidst nature or indulge in leisurely activities.
“For those with a taste for international travel, short-haul destinations such as Dubai and Thailand are topping the charts. Easy connectivity, luxurious experiences, and a change of scenery make these destinations appealing, particularly for older travellers who prefer hassle-free itineraries,” said a travel industry expert based in Ahmedabad.
