Former United States President Donald Trump has accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of favouring Democrats over Republicans ahead of the November presidential elections in the US. Speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania on Monday (Sep 23), Trump said Zelensky wanted Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris to win the elections. He also termed the Ukrainian leader the world’s ‘greatest salesman’.
“Zelensky is the greatest salesman in history. Every time he comes into the country, he walks away with $60 billion,” Trump said. The 45th POTUS also suggested that Zelensky was benefitting from US aid to Ukraine.
Trump’s statement came even as Zelensky plans to present his ‘victory plan’ to US President Joe Biden, Vice President Harris and the GOP presidential candidate during his ongoing trip to the United States.
Trump added Zelensky favoured Democrats because he receives financial aid from them. “I would do differently – I will work out peace,” the former US president promised.
Earlier, some GOP allies had claimed that Zelensky would want Trump back in the White House as he will bring an end to the Ukraine war faster than any other leader.
Trump on Monday also reiterated that he would broker peace between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin but did not provide specific details of how.
Zelensky’s victory plan
Zelensky is set to meet Biden and Harris on Thursday (Sep 26) where he is expected to present his ‘victory plan.’
The Ukrainian leader is expected to press the US leadership to allow Kyiv forces to use long-range missiles to launch strikes deep inside Russia.
Zelensky’s visit to the US coincides with efforts from the White House to prepare a new $375 million military aid package for Ukraine.
This autumn would “determine the future of this war,” Zelensky earlier wrote in a post on X.
