Two bodies recovered after SUV falls into canal, one still missing | Ahmedabad News

Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) recovered two of three missing persons from Fatehwadi Canal in the city after an SUV in which they were travelling plunged into the water. One more person, a teenager, is still missing, and search operations are underway, said police and AFES officers on Thursday.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening when a group of friends took the vehicle to the canal road for shooting Instagram reels. While attempting to take a U-turn near the canal, the driver lost control, and the SUV fell into the fast-flowing water.
City police and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot soon after receiving the alert. Rescue operations started immediately, and water flow from the Vasna Barrage was temporarily stopped to aid the search.
The recovered bodies were identified as Yash Solanki and Yaksh Bhankodia, both residents of Ellisbridge in the city. Cops said that Solanki’s body was found from the jurisdiction of Vejalpur police, and Bhankodia’s body was found from the jurisdiction of Vasna police on Thursday morning.
A little away from Vasna Barrage, Bhankodia initially drove the car. Later, he handed over the car to Solanki to drive. Krish Dave was also sitting in the car with them. The three friends were trying to take a U-turn and bring the car back, but for some reason, the car didn’t turn properly and went straight into the canal.
Their friend, Virajsinh Rathod, along with another friend, threw a rope into the water to try and rescue them, but none of the three could grab hold of the rope, and they were swept away by the strong current.
Both were part of the group that hired the self-drive SUV for a few hours. The third occupant of the car, Krish Dave, remains missing. Efforts to locate him are still ongoing, with rescue teams extending their search downstream and near underground water passages connected to the canal.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the car was hired by a group of around 10 friends to shoot social media reels. The car was originally taken on rent by Maulik Zaveri, who then handed it over to Hruday Solanki — a minor — for driving. Despite not having a valid driving licence, the minor drove the car, which ultimately led to the accident.
Police officials said the driver likely pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while making the turn, causing the vehicle to slide into the canal. CCTV footage of the incident supports this version.
M Division traffic police registered an FIR under BNS sections related to negligence, causing death by negligence, and the Motor Vehicles Act.
