Two try to extort 1L from 73-year-old advisor in Ghatlodia

Ahmedabad: A consultant from Ghatlodia allegedly fell victim to an extortion scam by two men who demanded Rs 1 lakh in damages, claiming to have been injured by his car. The 73-year-old company advisor, Kamlesh Mehta, filed a complaint with Ghatlodia police on Sunday.
The incident took place on Feb 20, when Mehta was driving home from his office in Navrangpura. Near Parasnagar crossroads, two men in an Activa stopped him, falsely claiming that his car had injured one of them. They insisted that the injured man be taken to a hospital. Acting out of goodwill, Mehta agreed, and drove them to a clinic, which was closed. The men eventually led him to the VS Hospital.
Once there, the accused manipulated the situation, falsely claiming that one of them suffered a fractured hand and demanded Rs 1 lakh for treatment. Under duress and fearing threats, Mehta agreed to withdraw the amount from his account in a private bank branch near Parimal Garden. However, by the time he reached the bank, the cash counter closed.
The accused then took two ‘self’ cheques of Rs 50,000 each, saying they would withdraw the money the next day. Suspecting foul play, Mehta informed the bank and stopped the cheque payments. After consulting his family, Mehta approached Ghatlodia police to file a complaint of extortion, abetment, and criminal conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
