Ahmedabad: In a move to revolutionis underwater rescue operations, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to deploy advanced robotics technology for such emergencies.
Underwater rescue operations have historically had several risks and challenges to human divers, including treacherous currents, contaminated waters, zero visibility conditions, and potential threat from underwater wildlife. AMC aims to bypass these challenges and locate bodies accurately by acquiring the Deep Trekker Underwater ROV, a robotic remote-controlled device that beams scenes from under water straight to the hand-held controller. A decision to purchase the Deep Trekker Underwater ROV was taken at Thursday’s meeting of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) standing committee meeting. Tenders are likely to be floated soon, with an estimated project expenditure of Rs 1 crore. With this, AMC will become the first in the state to acquire a robot to locate bodies in the Sabarmati and other waterbodies.
A trial run of the robot, which will be used by the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services, was conducted in Sabarmati river on Fire Safety Day. AMC sources said the Deep Trekker Underwater ROV, with 2000 lumens lights can search for bodies at depths of upto 200m and can surface with weight up to 100kg.
With the help of DTG3 application of the Deep Trekker Underwater ROV, unknown waterbodies can be inspected before diving. Once charged, it can operate for approximately for up to six hours and becomes operational in 30 seconds, an AMC official said.
The ROV is a portable remotely operated vehicle, capable of fast diving even in strong currents and can beam live 4K video to the waterproof handheld controller. It provides on-screen displays of heading, depth, water temperature, pitch, roll, camera angle, and battery level. It can operate in temperatures ranging from 10 to 50 degrees celsius, and the camera can be locked and moved.
Standing committee chairman Devang Dani said, “AMC has decided to acquire the Deep Trekker Underwater ROV for which the tendering process will happen soon. An expenditure of around Rs 1 crore will be incurred for this machine. The Sabarmati Riverfront has been developed along an 11km stretch.
“In a scenario where thousands of people visit daily, the Deep Trekker Underwater ROV will be helpful in the event of any accident or for rescue operation. It will assist in locating bodies in the river.”
